Iași is one of the few cities in Romania where students are not a subcategory of the population but the factor that sets its rhythm. More than 60,000 students in a city of roughly 270,000 means that in July the city visibly empties — and that in October it fills back up overnight.

The universities
The city has five state universities. The oldest is "Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University, Romania's first modern university, opened in 1860 — a year after Iași gave up capital status. Not a coincidence: it was the compensation.

Where to live
It depends on your campus, but there is a general pattern.
Copou is the academic hill — the main university, Copou Garden, the Botanical Garden. The logical choice if your classes are here. The trade-off is the climb: the city sits on hills, between roughly 45 and 95 metres, and Copou is the top end.
Păcurari and Tătărași offer the best price-to-access ratio in the city. They are residential rather than nightlife districts, but the transport into the centre is good.
The centre is expensive and noisy, but you are in the middle of everything.
Nicolina helps if you go home by train often — it is close to the station.

Transport
The CTP network has nine tram lines — 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13 — over roughly 140 km of track, plus more than 40 bus lines. Iași has no metro, and if you have read otherwise somewhere, that is a confusion with Bucharest.
A ticket costs 4 lei and is valid for 120 minutes, tram or bus alike. There are 30-day passes, and pupils up to 26 in accredited pre-university education get a free pass — the conditions for university students should be checked with the operator directly, as they vary.

Costs
Iași is among Romania's cheap large cities, and the reason is the student population itself: a market with that demand will not bear capital-city prices.
We do not publish rent estimates or monthly budgets — those change from one semester to the next and we cannot verify them to the standard of the rest of this site. What we can state, with a source, is that the transport fare is 4 lei and that central parking costs 7 lei an hour, Monday to Saturday 08:00–20:00, free otherwise and on Sundays.
What takes a while to learn
A few things that appear in no official guide:
Exam season changes the city. In January–February and May–June, the cafés in the centre and Copou are full from morning to night, every table taken. If you want to study out of the house, Palas turns over faster. Detail in the cafés of Iași.
Summer is a different city. In July and August your classmates go home and you are left in a city with 60,000 fewer people. Quiet, cheap and empty — pleasant or bleak depending on the person.
14 October blocks the centre. The Saint Parascheva pilgrimage brings hundreds of thousands of people, closes streets and reroutes transport. If your classes are in the centre, plan the journey differently.
Tuesday night is a night out. Venues run late even midweek — see nightlife.
