Copou

Copou is the hill onto which Iași effectively moved its cultural memory. Romania's first modern university opened here in 1860, the country's oldest botanical garden is here, and so is its oldest landscaped public park. That is no coincidence: after the city lost capital status, the institutions granted in compensation climbed the hill.

What you see

The "Anastasie Fătu" Botanical Garden — Romania's first, founded in 1856, and one of its largest. It is far bigger than it looks on a map; allow at least two hours to walk it properly.

Copou Garden — the country's oldest landscaped public park, begun in 1833–1834. It holds Eminescu's linden tree, probably the most visited tree in Romania, and the Obelisk with Lions.

"Alexandru Ioan Cuza" University — the main building, with its Hall of the Lost Footsteps, is a sight in its own right. In the 2022–2023 academic year the university had over 24,000 students.

The Vasile Pogor Museum — the house where the Junimea literary society met, and through which Titu Maiorescu, Mihai Eminescu, Ion Creangă and Ion Luca Caragiale all passed. Nearby, the National Athenaeum, with a theatre and music programme.

What it's like, practically

It is the greenest and quietest of the central areas — but it is a climb. The city runs between 45 and 95 metres of altitude, and the difference is felt exactly here. Tram 1 goes up from the centre and is the sensible option; on foot it is a walk not everyone wants after a day of museums.

The rhythm follows the academic year strictly: full from October to May, empty in July and August. Rents do the same — they explode in September and collapse in June.

Who it suits
