Iași has a café scene out of proportion to its size, and the explanation is neither gastronomic nor touristic. It is demographic: more than 60,000 students across five state universities create constant demand for one very specific thing — places where you can sit for two hours on a single order.
A market with that demand produces good cafés over time. Not because anyone decided to make Iași a coffee city, but because the local economy pushed in that direction.
What that means for a visitor
You get speciality coffee at standards comparable to Bucharest or Cluj, at lower prices. The price difference is not a tourist illusion: it is the same logic by which going out costs less here generally.
The second thing: you find places where you can actually work. Wi-Fi, sockets, tables where nobody hurries you after 40 minutes. In a classic tourist city that is rare; in a university city it is the standard.
By area
The centre — the highest density. It is also the area with the most atmosphere and the most crowding. This includes the venues around Piața Unirii, on the city's main axis.
Copou — the academic hill. The crowd is mostly students, and it shows: more relaxed, noisier in term time, emptier in summer. This is where "neighbourhood café" actually means something.
Palas — an office crowd, faster table turnover, everything at ground level with no steps. If you want to work and need the certainty of a free table, this is where you are most likely to find one.

When they are full
Here is the information missing from every recommendation, and the part that matters most.
During exam season — roughly January–February and May–June — the cafés in the centre and Copou are full from morning to night, every table taken by someone revising. This is not weekend crowding, it is continuous occupancy. If you are coming to work in that window, go to Palas.
In summer, July and August, it is exactly the reverse: the students are home, the city empties out and there are seats everywhere. The best period for anyone after quiet, even if it is the worst for anyone after atmosphere.
Sunday evening is the weakest moment of the week across the whole city — some venues close early or do not open at all.

How to spot a good one
In a city with this many options, simple criteria save time:
- Look at who is sitting there. If at 11am on a Tuesday there are tables occupied by people working, it is a place for staying. If it is empty at that hour, it is a transit café.
- Check for sockets. The best indicator that a venue welcomes long stays rather than merely tolerating them.
- Ignore the display case. The cakes on show tell you more about the patisserie than about the coffee.
What it is not
So you do not arrive with the wrong expectations: Iași does not have an unbroken literary café tradition, in the sense that Vienna does, or even interwar Bucharest. The Junimea society met in private houses — the Vasile Pogor House is that house — not in cafés.
The present scene is recent and is a product of today's student population, not of a nineteenth-century continuity. A less romantic story, and a more honest one.
