About City Centre

If you have a single day in Iași, you spend it here. The centre runs along the Piața Unirii – Ștefan cel Mare și Sfânt boulevard – Palace of Culture axis, and along that kilometre or so sit, side by side, almost all the sights people come to the city for.

What you see

At the lower end of the axis stands the Palace of Culture, the city's largest historic building: 298 rooms, some 36,000 square metres and four museums under one roof. Worth timing for the hour — the eight tower bells play *Hora Unirii*.

A few minutes' walk away, Trei Ierarhi Monastery, Vasile Lupu's foundation, its façade covered entirely in carved stone — almost unique in Romanian Orthodox architecture. Next to it, St Nicholas the Princely Church, founded by Stephen the Great and the oldest surviving church in the city.

Further up the boulevard: the Metropolitan Cathedral, which holds the relics of Saint Parascheva, and the "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theatre, Romania's first national theatre, from 1840.

For historical context, the Union Museum occupies the building that served as Alexandru Ioan Cuza's residence. Also central are Dosoftei's House, a museum of old Romanian literature, the Natural History Museum and the "Queen Marie" Municipal Museum.

What it's like, practically

It is the only part of Iași where you need no transport: everything is walkable, and the level differences are small — unlike Copou, which is a climb. The density of restaurants and venues is the highest in the city, and during term time hours run late even on weeknights.

Parking in the central zone costs 7 lei an hour, Monday to Saturday between 08:00 and 20:00; outside those hours and on Sundays it is free. Detail on the parking page.

Who it suits

Visitors on a short weekend, without a car. If you are staying two nights, this is where you lose the least time in transit. Accommodation costs more than in Păcurari or Tătărași, but the difference comes back as saved time.

One warning: in the first half of October, during the Saint Parascheva pilgrimage, the centre runs by different rules — closed streets, diverted transport, accommodation sold out months in advance.
