It is the only event in the Iași calendar that changes the city at the level of infrastructure. It is not a festival with a stage and a programme; it is a mass movement of people. Hundreds of thousands come to venerate the relics of Saint Parascheva, brought out of the Metropolitan Cathedral for the feast.

What actually happens
The relics are brought out of the cathedral and placed under a canopy outdoors, so that a continuous flow of people can reach them. The queue forms days before 14 October and stretches through the streets around the cathedral.
Waits can exceed twenty hours. That is not press exaggeration: people arrive prepared to stay overnight, with blankets and folding chairs, and the organisation involves tents, medical points and water distribution.
The effect on the city
Three things change at once, and all three matter logistically.
Accommodation sells out months ahead. This is not about higher prices but about zero availability in the centre. If you are coming in that window — pilgrimage or not — you book in August, not September. The accommodation list filters by neighbourhood; leave it late and the outer districts are the only realistic option.
The streets around the cathedral close. Car traffic is diverted and public transport reroutes. Walking distances grow: ten minutes across the centre can become twenty-five, the long way round.
Opening hours in the centre can shift. Museums stay open, but getting to them becomes more complicated.
If you are coming for it
A few things you only learn from someone who has been:
- The hour you join the queue matters more than the day. Nights move more slowly but are colder; afternoons are the most crowded.
- Dress in layers. October in Iași can give you 20°C at midday and close to zero overnight. The city sits on hills and you feel the difference.
- Do not count on a car. Central parking is paid on weekdays anyway — see the parking page — and during the feast the area is effectively unreachable by car.
- Dress appropriately. This is an act of worship, not a tourist event: shoulders and knees covered.
If you want to avoid it
Simple: do not come between 10 and 18 October. The rest of October is, in fact, one of the best times to visit Iași — the city is full of students, the theatre and concert seasons have started, and the weather still holds.

Eating and sleeping during the feast
The centre works differently. Venues around the cathedral are continuously full and some extend their hours. If you want to eat properly, go outside the perimeter — Palas and the boulevard stay reachable and have more capacity. The full list is under restaurants.
For accommodation, the outer districts are the only realistic option if you left it late: Păcurari, Tătărași, Nicolina. They are a tram ride from the centre, and during this period the tram beats the car.
Why here
The relics of Saint Parascheva have been in Iași since the seventeenth century, brought during the period when the city was the capital of Moldavia and building its standing as the religious centre of the region. That the country's largest pilgrimage is held here rather than in Bucharest is among the clearest evidence that moving the capital in 1859 did not move the symbolic weight with it.
