Tătărași

Tătărași is one of the largest quarters of Iași, east of the centre. It is residential in the real sense — blocks of flats, neighbourhood shops, schools, markets — and it is where you see how the city actually lives, beyond the tourist axis.

What you see

The Holy Apostles Peter and Paul Monastery — Barboi is the area's landmark, an ensemble worth stopping at if you pass through.

Otherwise Tătărași is not a place to visit but a place to live. That is not a criticism: quarters of this kind house most of the city's population and were built during the post-1945 industrialisation, along with Nicolina, Alexandru cel Bun and Dacia.

What it's like, practically

The tram links are direct and good. Line 1 connects Copou with the centre, Podu Roș and Tătărași — precisely the city's north–south axis. That makes the quarter very practical: you are a few stops from everything that matters, at noticeably lower prices.

With six restaurants and three places to stay listed, the offer is modest in number, but it is a neighbourhood offer: lower prices, larger portions, no pretensions about décor.

The scale of the quarter

Tătărași is among the most populous areas of Iași, and it shows in the local infrastructure: markets, schools, surgeries, small shops on every main street. It is a quarter that functions autonomously — you can live here without coming down into the centre daily.

Together with Nicolina, Alexandru cel Bun and Dacia, it belongs to the generation of estates raised after 1945, when the city's population multiplied several times over in three decades. The context is in the population of Iași.

Who it suits

Visitors on a tighter budget who do not want to be stuck on the outskirts: you are in the city, with a direct tram to the centre. Anyone staying more than a few days. And anyone moving to Iași — see the guide for new residents.

Bear in mind that the Iași rental market follows the academic year: demand explodes in September and collapses in June, so summer gives you the best negotiating position.
