Iași is a city where choosing the area matters more than choosing the hotel. The reason is geography: the city is built on seven hills, between roughly 45 and 95 metres of altitude, which means two points that look close on a map can be separated by a real climb.
A hotel rated 9 that sits 2.5 kilometres out and over a hill is a worse choice than one rated 8 on the main axis. This piece is about that axis.
The rule of the city
Almost everything worth seeing sits on a single line: from Copou in the north, through Piața Unirii and the historic centre, down to Palas and the Palace of Culture in the south. That is about 30 minutes on foot, end to end.
Sleep anywhere on that line and you need no transport for sightseeing. Sleep off it and you do.
The centre — for a first visit
The centre is the default choice, and it is the default for a good reason: it holds 15 attractions, 20 restaurants and 16 clubs from our selection on its own. Step outside and you are in the middle of everything.
Who it suits: a first visit, a short stay, anyone who wants to walk everywhere. The trade-off: it is the noisiest area at night, especially at weekends and during term. If you sleep lightly, ask for a courtyard-facing room.
Palas — comfort without losing access
Palas & Anastasie Panu is unlike the rest of the city: a slice built from scratch after 2012, right against the Palace of Culture. Everything is at ground level, no steps, space between tables, with the public garden alongside.
Who it suits: families with small children or a pushchair, business travellers, anyone who wants predictable comfort. The trade-off: it has the least character of anywhere in the city. If you came for old-town atmosphere, you will feel its absence.

Copou — quiet and green
Copou is the academic hill: the university, Copou Garden, the Botanical Garden, Eminescu's linden. It is quieter, greener and better looking than the centre.
Who it suits: longer stays, people here for culture and walking, summer visits. The trade-off: the climb. It is a hill, and coming back up in the evening you feel it. It is also less well served by restaurants than the centre.
The residential districts — price against access
Păcurari and Tătărași offer the best ratio of price to access. Nicolina is a good alternative if you arrive or leave by train, being close to the station.
Who it suits: stays of a week or more, people moving to the city, tight budgets. The trade-off: you need transport for sightseeing. Not a problem — a CTP ticket costs 4 lei and is valid for 120 minutes — but it is an extra step every time you go out.
What we do not recommend
Choosing by rating without looking at the map. The most common mistake. Check where the hotel actually is on the interactive map before you book.
Booking in October without checking the dates. The first half of the month is the Saint Parascheva pilgrimage, when central accommodation sells out months ahead.
Taking a car for a stay in the centre. Central parking is paid Monday to Saturday and the city works on foot. A car earns its keep only if you leave Iași.
When to book
Iași is not a city under constant accommodation pressure, but it has two clear peaks. The first half of October is impossible without booking in summer. Admissions and finals season at the universities fills the city with parents and candidates — less brutally, but enough to matter.
Otherwise a fortnight's notice is enough almost any time, and July–August is the most relaxed window: the students are home and the city empties out.
