Evening life in Iași follows the academic year strictly. From October to May the city is busy every night, including weeknights. In July and August it visibly empties — the terraces work, but the atmosphere is different.

With more than 60,000 students across five universities, that is not a metaphor: it is the single most useful practical fact about going out here.

What you will find

The register is broad and calibrated to a small budget: specialty coffee shops, neighbourhood bars, pubs, live-music venues and clubs. The list below covers them all — filter by neighbourhood or price tier to narrow it.

• The centre — the largest concentration, with 16 venues listed, and the longest hours.
• Palas — the covered option, good in bad weather.
• Copou — student register, close to the halls of residence.

The alternative to venues

Iași also has a real cultural programme, not just bars. The "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theatre is Romania's first national theatre, founded in 1840, and the National Athenaeum has a theatre and music programme. Student concerts at the University of Arts are often cheap or free.
