Events in Iași

The calendar of Iași is not read by month but through two overlapping cycles that completely change the city.

The academic cycle

With more than 60,000 students, the city has two speeds. October – May: theatre seasons, concerts, full terraces, late hours including on weeknights. July – August: it empties. The museums are uncongested, but the cultural programme thins out considerably.

14 October

On the feast of Saint Parascheva, Iași becomes the destination of the largest pilgrimage in Romania. Hundreds of thousands come to venerate the relics brought out of the Metropolitan Cathedral, and queues can exceed twenty hours.

The effect on the city is total: accommodation sold out months ahead, streets closed, transport diverted. If you are not coming for the pilgrimage, avoid the first half of October.

Who makes the programme

• The "Vasile Alecsandri" National Theatre — Romania's first national theatre, 1840.
• The National Athenaeum — theatre and music.
• The "George Enescu" National University of Arts — student concerts and productions, often cheap or free.
• The Palace of Culture — temporary exhibitions on top of the four permanent museums.

In summer, life moves outdoors: the Ciric lakes and Palas Garden.
