First, a necessary correction: Iași has no metro and never has. If you have read otherwise somewhere, it is a confusion with Bucharest. The city's network rests on trams.
The tram
The backbone. Nine lines — 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 11 and 13 — over roughly 140 kilometres of track. They run on their own right of way for much of their route, which makes them more predictable than buses at rush hour.
The most useful line for a visitor is 1: it links Copou with the centre, Podu Roș and Tătărași — precisely the north–south axis along which most of the sights sit.
The bus
More than 40 lines, urban and metropolitan, over some 449 kilometres. They cover the districts without trams and the communes of the metropolitan zone.
The line to remember: 50 — Gara – Piața Unirii – Târgu Cucu – Aeroport, every 30 minutes.

CTP fares in force since 1 February 2025:
- 4 lei one journey, valid 120 minutes
- 13 lei one-day pass
- 30 lei 3-day tourist pass
- 130 lei 30-day pass
- 99 lei fine for travelling without a valid ticket
Pupils and students up to 26 in accredited pre-university education get a free 30-day pass. Children under 7 travel free.
How to pay
Simplest: a contactless bank card or your phone, straight on the onboard validator — no app, no account. Alternatively: the 24pay or IA'SI BILET apps, or a contactless CTP travel card topped up at CTP points, E-Pin machines or online.
The metropolitan zone
Journeys to the surrounding communes carry a separate tariff set by AMTPI, the metropolitan authority, in force since 1 March 2025:
- 9 lei metropolitan ticket, valid 3 hours
- 7 lei commune → Iași, valid 2 hours
- 320 lei 30-day metropolitan pass
This matters for anyone living in Miroslava, Valea Lupului, Rediu or the other communes that have grown explosively over the last two decades.
The train
Iași railway station is in the city, at the end of Strada Arcu, with trams right outside. Main destinations: Bucharest (around six and a half hours by InterRegio), Suceava and Bukovina, Cluj-Napoca, Timișoara (one of the longest domestic routes, 16–17 hours) and Chișinău, via Ungheni.
CFR reissues the timetable every December, so check the schedule for the day you travel.
The plane
Iași International Airport (IAS) is 8 km east of the centre — one of the shortest city-to-airport distances in Romania. Bus 50 connects them every 30 minutes; about 20 minutes into the centre and 25 to the railway station. Taxis wait outside the terminal, and Bolt and Uber operate in the city.
The car
- Central-zone parking: 7 lei/hour, Monday–Saturday 08:00–20:00, free otherwise and on Sundays. Payment via TPARK, 24pay, UPPARK or Am Parcat. See the parking page.
- Morning traffic is heavy, because of commuting from the metropolitan zone.
- The terrain: the city sits on hills, between 45 and 95 metres of altitude. In winter, some climbs become difficult.

What you pay, depending on how long you stay
The right choice depends purely on duration:
- One day — single tickets, 4 lei each, valid 120 minutes. If you make three or four trips, the 13 lei one-day pass becomes better value.
- A weekend — the 3-day tourist pass, 30 lei. It pays for itself on day two.
- A week — 35 lei.
- A month or more — 130 lei for the 30-day pass.
Children under 7 travel free, and pupils and students up to 26 in accredited pre-university education get a free 30-day pass.
The metropolitan trap
This is the most frequent budgeting error for people moving to the area. If you live in Miroslava, Valea Lupului, Rediu or another commune in the Metropolitan Zone, you do not pay the urban fare. AMTPI tariffs apply: 9 lei for a 3-hour ticket, 320 lei for a monthly pass — nearly three times the urban one.
With 452,732 inhabitants in the metropolitan zone against 271,692 in the municipality, this affects a great many people.
Why the tram beats the bus
Not out of nostalgia. CTP trams run on their own right of way for much of their route, which makes them immune to morning congestion — exactly the advantage metros are built for, obtained without a tunnel.
In practice: if you have a choice between tram line 1 and a bus going the same way at eight in the morning, take the tram.
