Palatul Culturii

The largest historic building in Iași and the city's absolute symbol. It was raised between 1906 and 1925 to designs by the architect Ion D. Berindey, working with Filip Xenopol and Grigore Cerchez, in neo-Gothic style. It has 298 rooms across some 36,000 square metres of built surface. The tower clock has three faces 3.25 metres in diameter each, decorated with stained glass showing the twelve zodiac signs, and eight bells play *Hora Unirii* on every hour. It stands on the site of the Moldavian princely court, documented from 1434, over which a neoclassical palace had been built in 1804–1806 — the same plot, three architectures, five centuries. Today it houses four museums, under the "Moldova" National Museum Complex: the Museum of Moldavian History, the Ethnographic Museum of Moldavia, the Art Museum and the "Ștefan Procopiu" Science and Technology Museum.
