We start with what we do not do: we do not invent an "Iași cuisine". Plenty of guides do, because it sounds good, but it does not hold up. Iași has no dish of its own the way Bologna has ragù.
What is true, and more interesting: Iași is the cultural capital of a region with a well-defined kitchen of its own — Moldavian cooking — and the city's restaurants reflect it. The difference between those two statements is the difference between marketing and information.
What Moldavian cooking means
It is the cooking of an agricultural region with long winters: a lot of pork and poultry, polenta in place of bread with many dishes, fermented dairy, pies in many versions, and heavy use of preserved vegetables.
The recipes do not stop at the state border — the kitchen is shared with the Republic of Moldova, which is why Bessarabian places are easy to find in Iași. That is a consequence of geography, not of tourism.
What is worth ordering
Without claiming this is exhaustive or that every venue has all of it:
- Plăcinte — savoury and sweet pies, with cheese, cabbage, potato or apple. The most representative category and the easiest to find.
- Mămăligă (polenta), as an accompaniment rather than a main. With cheese and sour cream it becomes a dish in itself.
- Sarmale, in the Moldavian version — smaller than the Wallachian kind, often in vine leaves.
- Traditionally soured ciorbe, the part of the Romanian menu hardest to reproduce at home and therefore the best reason to order out.
- Local wine. The area around Iași is wine country, and Bucium hill is right on the city's edge.
Where to eat
Our restaurant selection only admits places rated above 4.0 on Google with at least 60 reviews, ordered by review count — real popularity, not payment.
By area:
The centre — the highest density, 20 restaurants in the selection. Both traditional and international places.
Palas — 17 restaurants, all at ground level, no steps. The most comfortable area for a long meal, especially with children.
The residential districts — Nicolina with 10, Tătărași, Păcurari and Alexandru cel Bun with 6 each. This is everyday food at neighbourhood prices.
Breakfast, the missing chapter
Worth saying for anyone coming from western Europe: Iași has no eating-out breakfast culture comparable with the brunch cafés of western capitals. There are places that serve in the morning, but the category is thin compared with lunch and dinner.
The practical consequence: if breakfast matters to you, check whether it is included where you are staying rather than counting on going out. The accommodation list filters by neighbourhood.
Why it is cheap
Prices are below the average for Romania's large cities, and the reason is demographic rather than gastronomic: more than 60,000 students create a market that will not bear capital-city prices. The consequence is that value for money is better here than in Bucharest or Cluj at the same class of venue.

When everything changes
Two moments matter:
In summer (July–August) the city empties of students. Venues stay open, but the atmosphere changes and some cut their hours.
Sunday is inverted relative to the rest of the week: the evening is the weakest moment, and lunch is the best. Families come out at midday, and the large venues in Palas and along the boulevard are then at their best. If you have one good meal to schedule, put it at 1pm on Sunday.
