Alexandru cel Bun

Alexandru cel Bun is one of the most populous quarters of Iași, in the south-west of the city. It is purely residential, built during the post-1945 industrialisation, and it is where a significant share of the city's population lives.

What is here

Not sights — the quarter has none listed, and it is honest to say so directly. What it has is what matters for daily life: six restaurants listed, neighbourhood shops, schools, markets and everything for everyday living within a short walk.

The quarter belongs to the generation of housing estates raised alongside forced industrialisation, together with Nicolina, Dacia and Tătărași. The historical context is in the history of Iași and in the population of Iași.

What it's like, practically

Tram links to the centre are good — that is the defining feature of the south-western quarters. A CTP ticket costs 4 lei and is valid 120 minutes, and a 30-day pass 130 lei. Detail on the transport page.

Food and accommodation prices are among the lowest in the city. The trade-off is distance from the tourist area: from Alexandru cel Bun you reach the centre in a few stops, but you are not in it.

The context

The quarter was built while the population of Iași was growing rapidly through industrialisation. Today the municipality has 271,692 inhabitants at the 2021 census, and quarters of this kind house most of them.

The area is fully equipped for daily life and has direct tram links to the centre — CTP's nine lines cover roughly 140 kilometres of track, and the south-west is well served. What is missing is tourist infrastructure, which is normal: the quarter was not built for visitors.

Who it suits

Not the weekend visitor. This is the quarter that matters for people moving to Iași, for students looking for cheap rent with good links, and for long-stay visitors who want low costs.
