Teiul lui Eminescu

Probably the best-known tree in Romania. It stands in Copou Garden, the country's oldest landscaped public park, and is tied to the period when Mihai Eminescu lived and worked in Iași, as a librarian and school inspector, reading at the Junimea circle. It is a different kind of symbol from the Palace of Culture: not monumental but sentimental — and the fact that a city picks a tree as its symbol says something about how it sees itself.
