Mănăstirea Galata

A sixteenth-century foundation on Galata hill, in the west of Iași, with a curtain wall and a bell tower. It dominates the Bahlui valley and forms part of the ring of fortified monasteries raised around the Moldavian capital, in a period when the city needed defensive and observation points on the surrounding hills. The position is the whole argument: from the hilltop you see the city spread along the Bahlui valley, and the view explains on its own why it was built there — a fortified monastery on a hill was not only an act of faith but a vantage point. The climb is real and you feel it, especially at midday in summer; if you come by public transport, the last stretch is on foot either way. As a working monastery, the usual rules apply: shoulders and knees covered, quiet inside the walls, photographs outdoors. The best moment is early morning, when the light falls on the city-facing façade and there is nobody about. It belongs to the monastery route, along with Cetățuia and Frumoasa.
